The​ ​textile​ ​art​ ​is​ ​the​ ​most​ ​important​ ​Peruvian​ ​handicraft​ ​manifestation.​ ​It​ ​first​ ​appeared​ ​during​ ​the​ ​old​ ​pre-ceramic​ ​period​ ​(about​ ​2.000​ ​B.​ ​C.),​ ​right​ ​after​ ​man​ ​mastered​ ​cotton​ ​and​ ​fiber.
The​ ​most​ ​important​ ​remains​ ​of​ ​textiles​ ​are​ ​those​ ​left​ ​by​ ​Wari​ ​and​ ​Paracas​ ​cultures.​ ​The​ ​techniques​ ​used​ ​by​ ​the​ ​Wari​ ​culture​ ​(located​ ​Northeast​ ​of​ ​Ayacucho)​ ​were​ ​absorbed​ ​by​ ​the​ ​Incas​ ​and​ ​later​ ​by​ ​the​ ​Spaniards​ ​who​ ​arrived​ ​in​ ​the​ ​15th​ ​century.
Currently,​ ​the​ ​most​ ​commonly​ ​used​ ​fibers​ ​for​ ​fabrics​ ​in​ ​Peruvian​ ​highlands,​ ​in​ ​the​ ​Puno,​ ​Cusco,​ ​Huancavelica,​ ​Ayacucho​ ​and​ ​Junin​ ​regions,​ ​are​ ​alpaca,​ ​vicuña,​ ​llama​ ​and​ ​sheep,​ ​among​ ​others.
